Use of U3A Trademark

Background

The U3A name and logo are registered trademarks of the Third Age Trust (University of the Third Age). Therefore use of the logo and name by users, other than the U3A movement itself, is subject to the approval of the Third Age Trust.

Use of the logo and name - permitted

Clearly use of the name in the normal course of articles, memos, letters etc where the use is part of the flow of the article and helps to promote the organisation should be encouraged and is permitted.

Use of the name in general advertising copy where the context does not imply endorsement or exclusivity will be permitted.

Use of the logo and name – not permitted

Use of the logo by third parties in advertising is not permitted.

Use of the name in any advertising, which can be read as either endorsement or exclusivity is not permitted.

Use of the name where the logo would have been more appropriate is not permitted.

Use of either the name or the logo as a heading, subject introduction or similar use, which implies involvement by the Third Age Trust or its Officers and/or agreement with the views being expressed, is not permitted.

Mechanism for obtaining approval for non-permitted use.

Obtaining approval in advance for any use of the name which implies involvement by the Third Age Trust or its Officers is a given. No payment would normally be sought for the use of the name in general articles or advertising copy.

However any endorsement or exclusivity associated with the use of the logo would be subject to prior agreement and payment in recognition of the Trademark - such payments being negotiated on a commercial basis and subject to approval by the Treasurer. The Treasurer is required to report to the National Executive Committee/Finance Sub Committee on any such approved use.

General

The trademark is an important recognised symbol of the Third Age Trust and is the primary tool for advertising and promoting what is done by the organisation. Therefore any use of the trademark by third parties must reflect positively on that image and not create any negative bias towards the key aims and objectives.

Equally the logo is now a powerful marketing tool, which can be used by third party service suppliers to target the very specific market represented by that symbol. Any approved use must reflect a sensible application of these principles.

Review

Any breaches of the above guidelines should be reported to the Company Secretary in the first instance and the Company Secretary and the FSC should review any approved uses, from time to time, accordingly.
